about

"Thumbin' the Strings" - Inspired by Merle Travis' solo guitar albums of the '50s & '60s, and played in the traditional thumb-and-one-finger Travis Style. Six songs are originals, while five - from the '20s through the '40s - were probably played by Travis but not recorded. "So Round So Firm" is the only song written by Travis on this album.

“Merle Travis style music alert!!!! “Thumbin’ the Strings,” a new cd release by Randy Buckner, will make you think you have discovered some missing tracks from Merle’s 1956 album, “The Merle Travis Guitar.” Randy has searched out and got that tone like Merle played on his record. Randy has masterfully worked up some songs Merle may have possibly played, but never recorded…and plays these great old tunes in a very accurate Merle Travis style of picking, plus has that original sounding tone. This makes it a super listening experience for Merle Travis and fingerstyle guitar music fans alike. There are some great originals that also have a real Travis feel. Randy is pretty much an authority on Merle Travis music, and he proves what he is talking about with this album. Contact Randy Buckner to find out how to get yourself a
copy.”

Eddie Pennington – Legendary Travis Style Thumbpicker, Performer, Teacher, and Recording Artist

“Just received Randy Buckner’s NEW recording, “Thumbin’ the Strings.” The first feeling that occurred to me was the sound and spirit of Merle Travis’ Capitol LP, “The Merle Travis Guitar.” Randy’s guitar sound, sense of ease, and phrasing is the best out there in the Travis Tradition. Bravo, Brother, for your artistry on this disc!”

John McClellan – Head of the Webster University Guitar Department, Recording Artist, Performer, and Author of Several Chet Atkins Books Published by Mel Bay Publications

“Great playing, and the recording sounds really good too. Two ‘thumbpicks’ up!”

Deke Dickerson – Recording Artist, Performer, Guitar Collector, and Author of Books Such as “The Strat in the Attic” Volumes 1 and 2.

“Randy Buckner’s CD, “Thumbin’ the Strings,” is a solo thumbpicking guitar masterpiece.”

Sean Mencher – Recording Artist, Performer, Producer, Member of the Rockabilly Group, “High Noon.”
