about

Written in 1930 by Chris Smith and Al J. Neiburg. My favorite versions of this song were recorded by Louis Armstrong in 1930, and Les Paul & Mary Ford in 1952. I’ve always loved the melody, and thought it lent itself to the Travis-style of guitar. Someone commented on a video of me performing the song, and said it reminded them of Fats Waller’s piano playing. That was a great compliment, because Merle’s style borrowed ideas from the great stride pianists of the 1920s. Travis’ other connection to this song was that he worked on the radio with Mary Ford, and is rumored to have introduced her to Les Paul.
