about

This song was written as an homage to Merle’s famous instrumental, “Walkin’ the Strings,” which was an homage to Mose Rager’s song, “Kansas City Rag.” In interviews, Merle told how he and his brother, John, would listen to Ragtime and Stride piano rolls on their parent’s player piano. Knowing this, I wrote “Thumbin’ the Strings” to reflect the Ragtime piano style – therefore the song has three distinct sections to it, similar to a piano rag.
